Carson Art Program is a PTSA-sponsored program that introduces artists and their works, along with art terms and concepts, to all students at Rachel Carson Elementary. Parent volunteers visit their children’s classroom once a month to discuss a specific artist and art print, then lead a project that focuses on a particular art concept.

No Experience Needed… You can be a Carson Art Volunteer!

Art project suggestions are made for each monthly lesson, with supporting materials to lead the instructor through the project. The art curriculum focuses on specific art elements and principals with each lesson. These include line, shape, color, texture, value, space, pattern and movement. Additional teaching aids are available to assist the instructor in the presentation of these elements and principles as well as others that may be relevant to an art project. No formal art background is necessary – just a desire to help out in your child’s classroom and interact with children.

Time Commitment

The in-classroom time averages about one hour once a month. Preparation time can range from 1/2 to 1 hour or more, depending on the enthusiasm of the volunteer. Carson Art volunteers will familiarize themselves with the artist who inspired the project, a relevant art print, and gather the materials needed for the project. The art supplies, art prints and curriculum teaching materials are provided by the PTSA.

Leads & Helping Hands

Ideally, two parents volunteer as Lead Art Docents. They can alternate months or work in class together. Also, extra help is often needed and appreciated to help the art project run more smoothly. “Helping Hands” can offer support and encouragement to students who are trying a new art technique and help with some of the more involved art projects. Two heads and four hands or more work wonders with 20-30 kids!

If you would like to volunteer to be a Carson Art Lead or a Helping Hand for your child’s classroom, please put your name on the sign-up sheet in the classroom on Curriculum Night or contact the Carson Art co-chairs, Bettina Thrun or Sheila VanNortwick.

Thank you for supporting the Carson Art Program!
